Your Guide to Villa Rentals in the Bahamas

Composed of over 3,000 islands, islets, and cays, the Bahamas is an archipelago with lots of diversity in terms of its landscapes, people, and activities. So, it's no surprise that luxury villa rentals in the Bahamas are just as diverse, though you'll often find a big focus on water, outdoor living, and that distinct Bahamian style.

The first step to renting a luxury villa in the Bahamas, then, is to decide where you want to stay. This doesn't necessarily mean deciding which exact island or cay. Rather, it means deciding if you'd prefer to stay in Nassau, Exuma, or Eleuthera.

Nassau has the most activities, restaurants, and nightlife of all the Bahamas islands, and is a great choice if you want a more action-packed holiday, making it especially popular for families and younger guests.

The Exumas, meanwhile, has a decidedly more laid-back vibe, making it a prime destination for those looking to relax and enjoy some of the Bahamas' world-famous fishing, snorkeling, and sailing.

And if you want an authentic Bahamian experience where you can discover lots of hidden beaches and interact with friendly locals – as well as enjoy some of the best surfing in the Caribbean - then Eleuthera is a great choice.

No matter which part you choose, though, you'll be able to find a Bahamas villa rental that has all the luxury amenities you need for an unforgettable getaway.

    Bahamas Luxury Villa Rentals

Luxury villas in the Bahamas are usually designed to allow you to take advantage of the beautiful weather and landscapes that the Bahamas is known for. Think thatched palapas, large outdoor living spaces, floor-to-ceiling windows, and infinity pools.

Bahamas villas come in a good number of different layouts as well, from 6-bedroom estates that are perfect for sets of families traveling together to 1-bedroom villas that are ideal for a romantic getaway.

Below are a few of our most requested villa types:

    Bahamas Oceanfront Villas

The Bahamas is one of the most sea-centric destinations in the world. The water has a distinct turquoise hue and is warm year-round; the beaches are postcard-perfect; the trade winds and the Caribbean Sea's interaction with the Atlantic to the north make for great surfing; there are tons of gorgeous coral reefs and interesting wrecks; and that's just the start.

The sea is also the focal point of Bahamas oceanfront villas, which let you experience those unbelievable views and that warm water right from your doorstep. They include:

Villa Sul Mare: One of the most coveted villas in Nassau, Villa Sul Mare is a modern 6-bedroom masterpiece. It features cathedral-style maple wood ceilings, maple wood floors, granite and marble counter tops, and a 3,000 square foot outdoor area facing the harbor with an infinity pool, grill, championship ping pong, and so much more. Combined with its immaculate landscaping and inspired furnishing, it's the ultimate Bahamian vacation getaway.

Nandana Villa: With its distinct Asian beach house design, Nandana (which means paradise in Sanskrit) evokes a Zen-like quality that lives up to its namesake. This fully staffed island estate features Burmese-teak ceilings, walls, and floors, as well as natural stone formations and a lighting system that was designed specifically to accentuate these natural features. It all comes together to create an atmosphere that truly needs to be seen – and experienced - to be believed.

Bluemoon Villa: Located in the ultra-exclusive Fowl Cay in Exuma, Bluemoon Villa is a 3-bedroom beach house overlooking the turquoise waters of the cay's North Beach. There's nothing like waking up to breakfast over that gorgeous view, knowing that the inviting sand and warm water is just a few steps away. A great value for up to 6 guests.

    Family Villas in the Bahamas

The Bahamas is a prime destination for families thanks to its multitude of activities. Beach hopping, chartering a catamaran, going on a fishing expedition, exploring blue holes and caves, swimming with pigs…you name, and the Bahamas has it.

Family villas in the Bahamas, then, tend to be focussed on letting families enjoy as much of the sea as possible, with amenities that ensure a safe and comfortable stay. Some favorites include:

Villa Miel: Set along the water's edge in Nassau, the 5-bedroom Villa Miel includes a beautiful Mediterranean-style home appointed with fine details like a Swarovski chandelier and marble staircase; a 10,000 square foot lawn for entertaining; and a large, oceanfront outdoor area featuring a saltwater pool, Jacuzzi, outdoor bar, and gazebo. There's even an additional 2 bedroom-suite above the garage in case you receive additional guests. It's the attention to detail that elevates this villa above others and makes it such a lovely choice for families visiting Nassau.

Seabreeze: Set up as three oceanfront treehouse pods, Seabreeze is the ultimate villa for a family of 4 traveling together. One of the pods features twin beds that are perfect for kids, while the master treehouse ensures that the parents get some well-deserved privacy. With wooden decks and an amazing oceanfront location facing the blue-green water of the Exumas, this villa really gives you that tropical getaway vibe.

Belmont Estate: Dating back to the 19th century, Belmont Estate in Governor's Harbour (Eleuthera) offers a truly authentic and historic Bahamian villa experience. The façade is classic Bahamian elegance, while the interior features high ceilings, original flooring, and handmade, custom furnishing. The main house features two large bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, one of which has twin beds, and the nearby Belmont Cottage provides an additional King bed. As befits a property that has been so lovingly maintained over the years, this flexibility makes Belmont Estate perfect for multigenerational families.

    Romantic Getaways in the Bahamas

With so many cays and secret secluded spots, the Bahamas makes for one of the most romantic destinations in the Caribbean and an ideal honeymoon spot. That's why there are so many 1- or 2-bedroom villas that are perfect for a romantic getaway in the Bahamas, including:

Lindon Villa: Specifically designed for couples, Lindon Villa is located on a secluded stretch of North Beach in Fowl Cay. Open, breezy, and bright, this romantic villa overlooks the limestone-coral cliffs of Gaulin Cay, offering the perfect romantic retreat where it's just you, your sweetheart, and paradise.

Birdcage Villa: Also in Fowl Cay you'll find Birdcage Villa, a 2-bedroom villa that's perfect for a couple traveling with children, or that just wants the extra space. It features an impressive open floorplan, a living room with a fireplace to cozy up to, a private freshwater pool, and nearby dock access, which is perfect if you're traveling by, or renting, a small boat.

Starlight: Like its sister villa Seabreeze, Starlight is set out over three separate pods, one of which features an indoor shower that opens to a large outdoor shower. It's a perfect setup for couples traveling alone, or for parents who want to enjoy some romantic time alone.

    Bahamas FAQ

What Should I Know Before Traveling to the Bahamas?

A valid passport is required to enter the Bahamas from the US, Canada, and the EU. Visitors from outside the US may also need to present a valid return ticket at customs.

How to Travel to the Bahamas?

While the Bahamas has over 20 international airports, most visitors will likely land in Nassau International Airport. From there, it's easy to catch a local connecting flight to one of the outer islands.

Air is the quickest way to get around the Bahamas, and a flight from Nassau to the Exumas will take about 40 minutes. Alternatively, an overnight ferry connects Nassau and the Exumas, and takes about 14 hours. A fast ferry is also available which takes 2.5 hours, and you can arrange a private speed boat which will make the trip in about 90 minutes.

Similarly, reaching Eleuthera (and Governor's Island) is a 20-minute flight from Nassau, or a 2.5-hour ferry.

What's the Best Time to Visit the Bahamas?

Many suggest visiting the Bahamas during peak season (mid-December to mid-April), since this is when you'll get to enjoy the best weather, including balmy average temperatures hovering near 87°F (31°C), especially if you travel closer to April.

That said, many favor the shoulder season (November-December and April- July) thanks to its better deals and smaller crowds. While you have a higher chance of rain at this time, it is mostly relegated to scattered showers in the afternoons. April-July will also see warmer temperatures.

The rainiest time is from August-October, which is also the height of hurricane season. While your chances of encountering an actual hurricane are quite low, you run a higher risk of getting rained out during this time. Not surprisingly, this is also when you'll find the best deals on Bahamas luxury villas.

Best Things to do in the Bahamas?

Go on a powerboat tour: There are so many beautiful cays and islets around the Bahamas, and the best way to see as many of them as possible is with a powerboat tour. Plus, many tour operators offer extras like lunch, water sports, and snorkeling.

Snorkeling and diving: On that note, the Bahamas is home to some great snorkeling and diving, especially around the Exumas. The Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park is particularly impressive, as it covers over 176 square miles and features blue holes, caves, undersea drop offs, the Thunderball Grotto (made famous by the film), and more.

Go fishing: The Bahamas is also home to some great sports-fishing, including some of the best deep-sea fishing and bone fishing in the world. Here you can find those iconic white and blue marlins, as well as snappers, groupers, permit, tuna, mahi mahi, and more.

How is the Food in the Bahamas?

Bahamian cuisine is a delicious mix of influences from the Caribbean and the American South. Seafood is central thanks to its abundant freshness, and conch fritters are widely considered the national dish. Rock lobster is another favorite, as is snapper, grouper, mahi mahi, and other fresh fish locally caught.

Popular side dishes include rice n' peas, baked macaroni and cheese, potato salad, cole slaw, and johnny cakes.

And for dessert, expect to see plenty of rum cakes and guava duff served with a rich butter rum sauce.

How is the Weather in the Bahamas

While there's plenty of that warm, sunny weather that the Caribbean is known for, the Bahamas is generally cooler than other Caribbean destinations thanks to the trade winds that surround its many islands, as well as its more northern location.

Average temperatures range from 85°F (27°C) to 87°F (31°C) in the summer and 70°F (21°C) to 78°F (27°C) in the winter. Evenings especially can be cooler, often with a refreshing ocean breeze.

The chance of rainfall also increases during the wet season from June-November, with October and June being the two wettest months. That said, the island enjoys over 300 days of sunshine, and generally most rainfall occurs in the form of scattered showers in the evening.
