This can be a complicated question to answer, since the large economies of Asia support their own travel industries, and Japanese travelers’ bucket lists don’t feature the same destinations as those from China or India. The Indonesian island of Bali tops the list, alongside the tropical paradise of the Maldives, warmly welcoming Thailand, and the subcontinental charm of Sri Lanka.
Requirements vary from country to country, so check individual countries' visitor bureaus for updated information — or ask our villa specialists for help finding the latest advisories.
English is often understood, especially in tourist areas, but is not universal. In Indonesia, Bahasa is the official language, with Dutch and Arabic also being widely understood. In Sri Lanka, the official languages are Tamil and Sinhala, and in the Maldives the official language is Dhivehi, which is closely related to Sinhala. In Thailand, the official language is Thai, but English is accepted as an unofficial second language throughout the country.
Passports are necessary, and many Asian countries require visas, depending on your country of origin. Please consult with a villa specialist or travel advisor well in advance to learn the latest requirements for visitors.
