Boasting grand Balinese-style design pedigree, it has a celebrity house guest list that includes ruling monarchs and rock legends. Within its enchanting gardens, situated right by the beach in quiet Sanur, are nine bedrooms, multiple living and dining pavilions, and a 20-metre pool and tennis court. Perfect for dreamy weddings, the villa enjoys direct access onto a glorious golden sand swimming beach, via a traditional stone doorway, while Sanur's many restaurants and boutiques are a five-minute walk away. A captivating setting for weddings and wellness retreats, Batujimbar is all about exclusivity and celeb-style living.

Influenced by traditional Balinese family living, Batujimbar comprises a series of alang-alang thatched pavilions spread through the substantial estate. At its centre is the Lembu Bale - a moated double-storey brick-built pavilion which houses an open-sided dining area on its upper floor looking onto the swimming pool on one side and across the gardens to the ocean on the other.

Closest to the beach are the living pavilion, the dining bale, and the splendid two-storey master bedroom suite. To one side is the Longhouse, comprising two bedroom suites, a lounge and a professionally equipped kitchen. Opposite is the Bali Pavilion, with two bedrooms, garden bathrooms and courtyard. Furthest from the beach, two more guest bedroom suites occupy the two-storey Pool Pavilion and share an open-fronted living area looking onto the 20-metre swimming pool. Two additional bedrooms are housed in the Family Pavilion situated near the villa entrance, while a tennis court and shower room lie just across the driveway.

One of the pleasures of a sojourn at Batujimbar is the sheer amount of living space. While there is plenty of room for a full house to socialize under the same roof, there are also lots of quiet corners for breaking away from the crowd.

The main living pavilion is open to the garden alongside the beach; its soaring alang-alang roof supported by towering coconut columns. Three sides of the pavilion are lined with comfortably upholstered built-in benches and at its centre four traditional Indonesian sofas with curved teakwood frames are set around an elaborately carved coffee table.

A breezy, fan-cooled lounge graces the upper level of the historic Lembu Bale, reached by a pair of stately staircases. With its roof supported by elaborate columns rooted in sandstone plinths carved in the shape of animals and mythical figures, this space is defined by two monumental bovine statues (lembu means cow in the Indonesian language). Cane and teak colonial-style seating provides the perfect spot to enjoy the sea view.

The Poolside Pavilion's living area provides yet another space for relaxation, with clusters of handsome seating, an alcove carpeted with thick comfy cushions, and a breakfast table facing the pool. There's a small kitchenette and a guest shower room tucked out of sight.

Guests have a choice of dining areas. Towards the beach is an enchanting raised dining bale with antique marble table and ten rattan chairs set under a thatched roof. For formal meals, there's an alfresco dining room in the Lembu Bale, where a 12-seater stunning teakwood table faces sliding glass doors that open onto fish ponds. In the Longhouse is a huge professionally equipped kitchen and, behind, a staff service kitchen and laundry.

In Batujimbar's fabulous formal gardens ancient moss-encrusted statues stand sentinel by the 20-metre pool whose stone terrace is lined with sun-loungers and parasols. Seemingly floating above a lotus pond is a large relaxation bale - the perfect spot for afternoon tea while admiring scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabarata carved into the wall behind. From the beachfront bale glorious views across the sea to the sacred Mount Agung and the island of Nusa Penida can be enjoyed; Sanur's acclaimed sandy beach and sheltered waters lie just beyond the traditional gate in the boundary wall. Elsewhere on the estate are the tennis court, refreshment area and sports shower.

Sanur, Indonesia

Bali. On the island of the Gods, where heaven meets earth, the phrase 'holiday in paradise' truly comes to life. What better way to enjoy the island than in the supreme comfort of a luxury villa in Bali? Whether you are looking for a beachside escape in Canggu, a cliff top retreat in Jimbaran, or a scenic hideaway in the hills of Ubud.

Sophisticated, wise and perhaps a tad more subdued than some of its younger siblings, Sanur is Bali’s original beach town. Popularised in the 1930's by western bohemians and artists, it continues to attract large numbers of well-heeled, often more mature visitors.

Strolling along the breezy beachfront promenade that stretches for more than five kilometres, it's easy to see why some holidaymakers prefer Sanur's restrained peacefulness over the hustle and bustle of Kuta, Jimbaran or Seminyak.

Indeed, situated a mere 30-minute drive from the airport and within easy reach of many of Bali's beauty spots, Sanur is a fantastic location for families or groups of friends looking for a quiet and genteel base for exploring the island.

Compared to some of the west-coast Bali destinations, where space is at a premium and villas are often squeezed into tiny plots, our Sanur luxury villas exude splendor, space and style. All are situated on the coast and enjoy ocean views – most are absolute beachfront. From the comfort of your poolside lounger, surrounded by lush tropical gardens, you can lie back, relax and take in the mystical eastern islands of Penida, Ceningan and Lembongan, shimmering on the horizon, while a full contingent of professional and helpful staff tend to your every need.

Sanur first rose to fame thanks to its golden sands, and its beaches continue to stand out for their relaxed vibe, gentle ocean swell and awesome panoramas. Our favourite spots include Cemara Beach and Sinddhu Beach, while Mertasari Beach is a particularly popular Sunday picnic spot among local families.

You’re spoiled for choice when it comes to eating out in Sanur, with a wide variety of restaurants readily accessible from the beachfront promenade. Kayu Manis and Firefly are consistently rated as two of the best dining spots on the island, while for lunch and comfort food we can recommend Sala Bistro or Warung Papa Pizza.

For a taste of local history we suggest a visit to the Le Mayeur museum, which is named after (and was the home of) the famous Belgian painter, Adrien-Jean Le Mayeur – one of the many artists and travellers who made Sanur their home in the past century.

Despite its more tranquil reputation, Sanur has a varied nightlife which ranges from live music at Casablanca or elegant vibes at the Piano Lounge, to exotic cocktails at Linga Longa.

Perhaps the antithesis of Kuta - Bali 'party central' - Sanur's mature vibe, awesome beaches and sophisticated crowd would very much suit a family or a group of friends looking for a mellow and laid-back location which is totally at ease with itself.
