Slide the full-height glass wall back at Villa Portón and the living room and the pool become one room — lawn past the loungers, parasol at the far end. Four bedrooms sleep eight in a modern Barranca villa, with an included cook handling all the meals. The fit: a multi-generation family with kids on the lawn and grandparents on the terrace, two couples on a long weekend who came for the open-plan core, or a friend group of eight who chose modern Barranca over the noisier sea-facing villas.

Mornings start with a swim before breakfast at the covered terrace. The pitched wood-plank ceiling runs the length of the great room, the glass wall folded back to the pool. Past the lawn, a parasol sits over the loungers at the far end. The kitchen is open-plan with a granite island and a gas range. By sundown the doors stay open and the long table sits under the blue octopus painting for dinner.

Villa Portón sits in Barranca, the tree-lined northern pocket of the resort. The Racquet Center is a short cart ride for the morning hit. Altos de Chavón and Dye Fore are a short ride in the other direction, with the cliff-top village and the cliffside fairway in the same outing. Minitas Beach is a short ride for the sand day, and Teeth of the Dog — ranked the Caribbean's top course by the World Golf Awards — is a short ride south for the round.
